Join us as we present the Appalachian Storyteller Dinner!

During An Appalachian Christmas Dinner, guests will feast on an authentic Appalachian dinner complete with moonshine, wine, and stack cake and authentic Appalachian storyteller, and live music! Storytelling will be provided by Tom Hicks and Susie Monick and Joe, whose original stories blend traditional mountain folklore, music, and an awareness of contemporary Appalachia.

STORYTELLER:

Tom Hicks

Tom Hicks Appalachian StorytellerTom Hicks was born in 1954, one hundred years after the death of one of his favorite authors and naturalists Henry David Thoreau, and grew up in his own Walden near Norris Lake in East Tennessee. Tom is an entrepreneur and has been involved in the recycling and environmental business for more than 40 years. He is the grandson of a bootlegger and the son of a barber who played banjo and steel guitar. He was a shoeshine boy in his Daddy’s barber shop where he heard many stories. Tom has worked as an actor, director, and producer in local theater and a speaker about spiritual issues in the modern age. He has authored ten book and plays, and several film projects. His characters “Tommy Typical” and “Hickey” which are in fact alter egos appear in five of his works and explore the sacred nature of everyday life on Planet Earth and Beyond. His motto is “Relax. You are eternal.”

Joe Collins
As a songwriter Joe Collins has had songs recorded by Rascal Flatts, Lee Brice, Randy Travis, Billy Ray Cyrus, Kenny Rogers, Eric Church, Chris Ledoux, Andy Griggs, Cletus T Judd, Confederate Railroad, Dixiana, The Whites, Jett Williams, Deryl Dodd, Kacey Jones, Margo Smith, Randy Kohrs, Dallas Smith and many others.
As a keyboard player Joe spent years traveling the country and the world performing with Tom T Hall. He also did stints with Michael White, Rodney Atkins, Paulette Carlson and many others. He was a member of The Drifting Cowboys (for years alongside legendary steel guitar player Don Helms) performing with Jett Williams. Joe is also a founding and long time member of the vocal trio Phillybilly with fellow songwriters Rich Fagan and Kacey Jones. And his newest band project as a member of Holly Wood and the Extras.

Sue Collins Appalachian Music ProSusie Monick
Susie was the founding member of Buffalo Gals, the first all girl Bluegrass Band in the 1970s. She has been a ballet dancer since age four and studied with George Balanchine in New York City. Her album “Melting Pots” is hailed as the first jazz banjo album. She played and recorded with Richard Dobson and State of the Heart, Vassar Clements, Woody Herman, Townes Van Zandt, Josie Kuhn, Doug Dillard, and Ginger Boatwright. Her Grand Ole Opry debut was with Nanci Griffith and The Blue Moon Orchestra. Susie fronts her own band Holly Wood And The Extras. She plays banjo, mandolin, and button accordion. As an actor, Susie was the lead in the 48 Hour Film Festival short film “Miracle on Juneteeth” which won the Audience Favorite award. She has appeared in several music videos and movies. As a true Renaissance Woman, Susie also paints with watercolors and makes clay sculptures.
